In the Alberta program of studies a student is often required to define things both quantitatively and qualitatively.

For example, in the Physics 20 program of studies, outcome 20–A1.1k reads:

Students will define, **qualitatively** and **quantitatively**, displacement, velocity and acceleration.

## Qualitative:

Qualitative means describing in words. For example:

Acceleration is the change in velocity over time.

## Quantitative:

Quantitative means describing in terms of numbers, symbols or math. For example:

$latex vec{a}=frac{Delta d}{Delta t}$

An object will have an acceleration of 1 m/s^2 if it accelerates from rest to 1m/s in 1 second.
